Rising number of commuters is a desirable outcome of the Metro’s purpose
It is efficient, convenient and a painless way to commute. It is no wonder then that the Dubai Metro is attracting more and more people each year. Statistics for the first quarter of 2013 are extremely heartening — 33.3 million commuters have used the metro during this period, a significant increase in numbers as compared to the same period last year. Transportation infrastructure’s critical role in speeding up the evolution of a city is a given in the modern urban narrative and Dubai Metro is playing a starring role in this script since its launch in 2009.
One of the most effective mobility mechanisms, a metro’s success is directly proportional to the number of people who opt to use it as a first-choice mode of transport on a daily basis, not to mention the environmentally friendly rating it enjoys as compared to other forms of commuting. While the swelling statistics of metro commuters in Dubai are to be welcomed as a highly desirable outcome, what would boost these numbers are when more areas of the emirate, including the outlying ones, get connected. The wider the network, the stronger its impact on the commuters’ quality of life.
