Abu Dhabi: The UAE Cabinet adopted last week the technical regulations for the emergency communication system in vehicles — ECall — issued by the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology (Esma), which aims to reduce the response time in case of traffic accidents by up to 40 per cent.
Abdullah Al Maeeni, director-general of Esma, confirmed that the ECall emergency communication system will be applied in the UAE for 2021 vehicle models, which will be delivered to the UAE market in 2020.
The ECall system is the first of its kind to be implemented in the Middle East and North Africa, and the second globally following the European Union.
Explaining how the ECall system works, Al Maeeni said that when a collision occurs between two vehicles, or the vehicle collides with anything else, ECall operates and communicates via the vehicle driver’s mobile network as a communication channel. The incident is reported at the nearest emergency point. The system will enable authorities to reach the site in the shortest possible time.
Al Maeeni said that three years of study and research have been carried out for the ECall system, including meetings with government and private companies such as vehicle manufacturers.
