Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Police has launched an electronic system that will track the movement of suspects involved in minor offences, instead of jailing them.
The round-the-clock tracking system comes in the form of an e-bracelet with GPS technology. It logs the time and location of a suspect, and works as an alternative to short-term jail time for minor offences in the capital.
The surveillance system is being implemented in coordination with the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department (ADJD) and will be used to replace short-term imprisonment of suspects.
The system will help authorities to monitor the accused 24/7. The idea came after studying a similar system in a number of foreign and Arab countries.
Monitoring of suspects will be carried out upon instruction by the court and the Public Prosecution decisions, the ADJD said on Tuesday.
Counsellor Ali Mohammad Al Baloushi, Attorney General of Abu Dhabi, said that the use of advanced technology to keep a tab on suspects will have a positive impact on the implementation of court rules.
It will also prevent a repeat of similar crimes and help suspects to reintegrate into their families and society, Al Baloushi said.
Major General Maktoum Al Shareifi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Police, said the monitoring system will ensure the safety and security of the public as well as the family of the accused.
What is GPS?
Global Positioning System is a network of orbiting satellites that send precise details of their position in space back to earth. The signals are obtained by GPS receivers, such as navigation devices, and are used to calculate the exact position, speed and time at the receiver's location.
