Dubai: A citywide campaign to highlight the negative impact of plastic on the environment has been launched by Dubai Municipality.

The monthlong campaign, Plastic-Free Summer, will create awareness among different sections of the society about the harmful effects of plastic usage.

The campaign will include many environmental and educational workshops and entertainment events that highlight the issues of plastic pollution and the damage it does to the environment and natural resources.

The activities are aimed at raising the level of environmental awareness and encourage positive environmental behaviour among different segments of the society.

Aliah Al Harmoudi, director of Environment Department, said that the Plastic-Free Summer campaign targets all family members, residents and tourists, each of whom has a prominent role in contributing to reducing plastic pollution that negatively impacts the marine life.

She added that the campaign also aims at reducing the carbon footprint in the field of water, air and waste, thereby reaching sustainability in natural resources that can only be achieved through a society with high environmental awareness.

The campaign will go to several locations such as the Dubai Centre for People of Determination, Modhesh World Mirdif City Centre KidZania and schools at the beginning of the academic year.

Activities such as the ‘Environmental Choice Challenge’ as well as ‘Environmental Replacement’ will be held at different locations.
