Sharjah: A fire at a Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority power station near King Faisal road caused power outage in the surrounding areas on Monday morning.

There were no reported injuries in the fire. However, residents were left fuming in the heat due to the power outage that followed. Many of them wandered outside as the temperatures inside the buildings became unbearable.

Parts of Buhairah Corniche were also without power for more than two hours, and office workers went back home as they were unable to work without electricity.

According to eyewitnesses the fire broke out around 7am and the power connection was affected only at around 8.10am.

"I heard a loud explosion at around 7.15 and then in a few minutes the power got tripped and was restored immediately. Later, at around 8.10 the electricity was disrupted and since then we are waiting outside," said Mohammad Tamim, an accountant, who works in Burhaira Corniche and lives in the same area.

Shopkeepers could be seen standing outside their shops, as the heat inside became unbearable once the effect of air-conditioners subsided.

"I don't have a choice. I can't close the shop, I will lose business. But I can't stay inside either. I am going inside only  if there are customers. I hope the power will be restored before the refrigerated items get spoilt," said Muinuddin, a grocery worker.

The power was restored around 10.40am.
