Ras Al Khaimah: A 36-year-old Emirati man survived after his powered glider crashed from a height of 20 metres.
The Emirati, Fasial Bin Suwaid Al Shuhi, told Gulf News from his hospital bed that he lost control and fell.
Al Shuhi said the incident took place in Al Muairedh costal area on Friday at around 5.30pm.
He escaped with some bruises. “It’s my hobby and I used to practice it once or twice during the week. I started this hobby around an year ago and never had any accident, but this time there was an imbalance in the glider that led to the fall.”
Al Shuhi’s friends, who had accompanied him, called the ambulance and was moved to Saqr Hospital.
He said after the accident his family members and friends advised him to abandon his hobby.
The incident is the second of its kind in the emirate.
On March 26, Gulf News reported a similar incident involving a Briton.
A British expatriate suffered “a few broken ribs and bruises” after he crashed his hang glider into a tree after swooping down a rocky valley from Jebel Jais.
David Willis, 78, said “that the tree broke his fall” after a gust of wind knocked his glider out of the sky at about 1,000 feet.
Willis thanked a group of young men who came to his help after seeing the accident and informing the authorities about it.
