Dubai: A visitor has been accused of organising a street gambling game at a public place and inviting passers-by to play for money, heard a court on Sunday.
A police team was doing routine round in commercial districts at Freij Al Murar area when they spotted a crowd surrounding the 30-year-old Pakistani visitor at 10.30pm. The police found out that the suspect had set up a street gambling game, by using a torchlight and a gambling device, and was inviting pedestrians to bet.
Upon seeing the policeman, the suspects panicked and admitted that he had been calling people to gamble.
The suspect was apprehended instantly and taken to the police station for investigation.
Prosecutors accused the suspect of organising a gambling game at a public place and inviting people to bet.
The suspect pleaded guilty when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.
He asked presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi for a lenient punishment.
The policeman, who arrested the suspect, told prosecutors that he spotted a crowd surrounding the suspect at 10.30pm.
“When I went to check what was happening, I realised that the crowd were gambling beside the pavement. The suspect was apprehended immediately for organising a gambling game at a public place. We seized a torchlight, a black belt, screwdriver and an ironing table that he had been using as part of the game. Upon confronting him, he claimed that he organised a gambling game in public and charges gamblers Dh100 each,” the policeman told prosecutors.
The suspect was cited as telling prosecutors that he organised a gambling game in public along with another Bangladeshi suspect who remained at large.
A ruling will be heard on August 15.
