Dubai: A salesman accused of injuring a secretary while trying to steal her bag will be jailed for one year after losing his appeal.

In the February 2017 incident, the 27-year-old Chinese secretary was walking home after work when she felt someone pulling her bag.

When she resisted and held on to her bag, the the 29-year-old Pakistani salesman pulled it with more force resulting in the woman falling down and injuring her shoulder.

In February, the Dubai Court of First Instance jailed the defendant for one year for assaulting the woman, injuring her and stealing Dh3,700 cash and valuables from the bag.

The defendant appealed the ruling before the Appeal Court and sought to have his imprisonment reduced.

Presiding judge Saeed Salem Bin Sarm rejected the appeal and upheld his one year jail term.

The accused, who entered a not guilty plea, will be deported.

Records said the accused was seen on surveillance cameras walking behind the secretary before he snatched her bag.

The secretary testified that “the defendant was chasing me … suddenly he tried to take away my bag but I grabbed it firmly. He pulled it strongly and I lost my balance and fell down. I hurt my arm and shoulder. Meanwhile, he ran away. The bag contained cash, a phone, two SIM cards, my driving licence and insurance card”.
