Dubai: A college girl, who was caught with 1.1gm of marijuana in pouches that she hid in a cigarette pack, has been jailed for 10 years.

Drug enforcement officers apprehended the Sudanese college girl following an informant’s tipoff that she possessed and consumed drugs in March.

On Wednesday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Sudanese defendant of possessing five pouches of marijuana without an intention and consuming methamphetamine, amphetamine and tramadol.

Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi also fined the accused Dh50,000.

According to the primary ruling, the defendant will be deported following the completion of her punishment.

When she appeared in court, the girl contended that she possessed the drugs for her personal use.

She also admitted that she consumed methamphetamine, amphetamine and tramadol.

Following her arrest in Al Barsha area, drug enforcement officers referred the defendant to Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department for a drug test. The defendant tested positive for three types of mind-altering substances.

Records said drug enforcement officers confiscated the five pouches wrapped up in a white tissue that was placed in the cigarette pack.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
