Dubai: Pakistani police and security agencies have started a crackdown on supporters of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to stop them from reaching the airport to receive their leader.
Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have announced that they will reach Lahore from London on Friday evening to face possible arrest after a verdict against them by the National Accountability Court last week.
Highly placed sources in Lahore confirmed that the roads to the Lahore airport are being blocked in a bid to stop PML-N supporters from reaching the airport.
“There are also reports that the Lahore Airport may also be shut down temporarily to stop the flight from landing,” said sources. They feared there would be complete chaos and clashes would break out between supporters and law enforcement agencies if they were stopped from taking out the rally in support the Sharifs in Lahore - the stronghold of the PML-N.
Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Captain (retired) Safdar have been sentenced to 10 years, 7 years and 1 year respectively. PML-N considers it as a conspiracy to oust them from politics and election process.
According to reports, the PML-N is gearing up for a big show to receive their leaders at the airport. Former Chief Minister of Punjab and President of PML-N Shehbaz Sharif will lead the main rally from the city to airport.
