Patna: A man in Bihar state killed his daughter by slitting her throat after she married her boyfriend against his wishes.

The case marks yet another incident of honour killing in the state and the fourth one in the past one week alone.

Police have arrested the accused and sent him to jail.

Police said victim, identified as Rekha Kumari, a resident of Garhani village in Bhojpur district, was madly in love with a local young man and had been talking to him regularly.

After coming to know to know about their affair, Rekha’s parents had warned her against making any contact with the boy, but she ignored them.

Earlier this week, the young woman fled her home and married her partner at the local court, a move which apparently angered her parents who plotted to kill her.

Police said, as a ploy, the father requested his daughter to return home while promising to solemnise her wedding with much fanfare.

However, when she returned, her parents hacked her to death on Thursday evening.

On Friday, police recovered her body, with throat slit open, from her locked room.

Soon after the incident, the police swung into action and arrested her father, a vegetable vendor. During interrogation, the man confessed to killing his daughter, police said.

“The man said he had strictly warned his daughter to refrain from meeting her boyfriend but she not only defied his warning but also married him. This was the reason of her killing,” the local Bhojpur district superintendent of police Aditya Kumar told the media on Saturday.

This was the fourth incident of “honour killing” in the state in the past one week.

Earlier this week, a young girl was burnt to death by her parents after she was caught having affairs with a local youth despite warning. After killing the girl, the parents tried to bury her on the sandy bed of the river Sone in Bihta block of Patna district when the police arrested them.

Another incident of honour killing was reported from the Barh locality of the same Patna district where a youth was beheaded for meeting his married girlfriend.

Police said the youth had been meeting the girl even after her marriage. Subsequently, her in-laws warned him against meeting her but he ignored.

Yet another incident of honour killing was reported from Siwan district where a youth was killed by girls’ parents for his love affairs.

Reports said after the recovery of youth’s body, his parents reached the girl’s house on a tractor on Friday and began cremating his body right in front of her house when the police reached the spot and prevented them from doing so. The police are camping on the spot.
