Dubai: A two-lane underpass linking Airport road with Marrakech street will open for traffic on Friday, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Monday.

The underpass gives direct access to Airport road for traffic from Marrakech street, easing the flow in a busy area housing several schools as well as a number of government and private offices and industrial buildings.

“This underpass is part of the Airport-Marrakech Streets Junction Project. It included the construction of two bridges on the Airport Street comprising three lanes in each direction, and a ramp branching out of a downtown-bound bridge leading to Dubai International Airport Terminal 3, thus bypassing the traffic light. It also included construction of another bridge leading to the premises of the Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects (former Dubai Airshow). The project will cut the waiting time at the junction from seven minutes to less than a minute,” said Nabeel Mohammed Saleh, Director of Roads at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency.

The opening of the underpass brings to an end all roadworks related to Airport Road expansion which was carried out over several phases.

Over the past two years, the RTA has opened all bridges at the four junctions of the Airport road.

The project has drastically cut down travel time on Airport road, easing the traffic flow.
