Abu Dhabi: The Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with the Automobile & Touring Club of the UAE, have launched a smart service to allow citizens and expatriates in the UAE to apply for the international driving licence.
The ministry aims to promote its smart services via their app (MOI UAE) and website, as part of the UAE Smart Government vision 2021 to put the country among the best in the world in terms of economic and social development.
Through this partnership, the ministry intends to reduce the time of service and enhance customer satisfaction.
The Automobile & Touring Club of the UAE, established in 1965, will have the exclusive rights to issuing international driving licence in the UAE.
Enhanced services
Brigadier General Hussain Ahmad Al Harthy, chairman of the MoI Smart Services and Artificial Intelligence Council and Director General of electronic services and communications head of the MoI Smart Services Artificial Intelligence Council, said that with the provision of international licence issued through electronic and smart channels, the Ministry of Interior’s services will be at par with the UAE’s vision of adopting the latest in technology.

The ministry is actively enhancing strategic partnerships between state institutions and private entities in various sectors to facilitate and provide joint and innovative services to ensure ease of services to the users.
Mohammad Bin Sulayem, Chairman of the Emirates Automobile and Touring Club and vice-president of the International Automobile Federation said: “Through this partnership, the MoI ensures smart services to the drivers while applying for international driving licences.
"The process of application is simple and is valid for one year. Drivers can refer to the smart app for the legal requirements while driving abroad.”
Protection
The international licence will also protect the driver and his family in the event of accidental damage to the vehicle when abroad.
The international driving licence will provide the required legal insurance cover and will also be one’s identity in the event of the loss of passport.
The international driver’s licence will be a world-wide recognised document — and available in 10 languages to help overcome language barriers.
Colonel Faisal Mohammad Al Shammari, Director of Corporate Governance Department Member and Secretary of the MoI Smart Services Artificial Intelligence Council, said that this development is part of efforts to promote smart and innovative services offered by the ministry in its plans to automate the smart services and create more of them to upgrade the levels of smart services.
