New Delhi: A man, seeking to pass himself of as a Lt Colonel, tried to enter the headquarters of the Indian army, the Sena Bhawan, along with his wife, his wife’s brother, and a driver but was caught, police said. All four are being questioned.

The accused, identified as Amit Sharma from Ghaziabad, wearing a army uniform with the name Abhimanyu Sharma, showed an entry pass from the Prime Minister’s office to the security guard at the entrance of Sena Bhawan at 5pm, said Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, Madhur Verma.

The guard however got suspicious and asked few more questions. When he noticed uneasiness in the “Lt Col”, the guard immediately informed his seniors.

The four were detained and preliminary questioning revealed that the accused had earlier entered the Ministry of External Affairs and other government offices with fake identity cards. Later on, after verification by army officials, Sharma, his wife and other two accompanying persons were detained.

“Prima facie, it appears that accused persons used to cheat innocent unemployed youth by promising them to get them a job in the army,” the police officer said.

Sandeep Kumar told police that he had given Rs250,000 (Dh13,359) to Sharma for a job in the Indian Army.

“Further interrogation is in progress and necessary legal action is being taken,” said Verma.
