Dubai: A Filipino clerk has admitted to fixing a GoPro camera in a washroom to film his female flatmates in the shower, a court heard on Thursday.

The camera was discovered by a Filipina secretary who spotted a cameras lens above her head in August.

When she returned home from work in the afternoon, the secretary notified her compatriot flatmates, according to records, before they removed the camera from the ceiling. The flatmates then removed the memory card and connected it to a desktop before they discovered that some of them had been filmed naked in the shower.

When they confronted their male flatmate, 41, the man admitted installing the camera.

Records said the flatmates then decided not to report the to the police and to forgive him, after he convinced them that there were no more images.

The next day, one of the women reconnected the memory stick to her desktop and discovered that there had been more than 100 videos and images of her and her friends taken in the shower.

The women then reported the matter to the police that called the clerk for questioning.

Prosecutors accused the Filipino suspect of molesting his female flatmates and breaching their modesty.

The suspect pleaded guilty and admitted filming his female flatmates when he appeared in the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.

One of the filmed Filipinas, 32, claimed to prosecutors that her flatmate warned her that she had discovered the camera fixed in the washroom. “We removed the camera and checked the content of the memory stick, we discovered that we had all been filmed naked. We reported the matter to the police ... the suspect was summoned for questioning and he was apprehended. We discovered that he had been filming us since December 2017,” she testified to prosecutors.

A police corporal told prosecutors: “During questioning, the suspect admitted that he had filmed his flatmates naked in the shower. When asked why he did so, he alleged that he used to film them nude and watch the content to please his sexual desires.”

A ruling will be heard on October 8.
