After Kim Jones’ 2022 womenswear collection for Fendi introduced elements of nostalgia, freedom, and fun, Fendi’s Spring/Summer 2023 menswear collection follows with an unabashed love for denim, natural animal prints, and earthy tones.

A little bit of nostalgia was at play over the weekend at Milan Fashion Week, where Fendi’s premiere featured some blasts from the past like brazen denim-on-denim use, and even cow hide. According to the iconic Italian designer: “The collection explores summer dressing through natural hues inspired by the earth, sea and sky. Classic silhouettes are deconstructed to create flyaway volumes, while crisp and soft textures meet with souvenir-inspired accessories and jewellery.”

You could use the word kitsch, but you could also say it’s just plain fun, because when is nostalgia not fun? Distressed jean shorts? Fringed bags? Bring it on.

Earthy patterns are another big one, as are zippers, loafers, recycled plastic and even wool and fur for Italy’s iconic design labels.

Versace’s premiere was bursting with colour and sustainable, eco-conscious materials to entice the younger generation.

Dolce & Gabbana, too, got all nostalgic on us with distressed and frayed denim, daring further with velvet, fur and even rope used for laces.

Emporio Armani went for a more traditional showing at Milan Fashion Week, adding a somewhat formal look to summer wear with its crisply tailored presentation.

Denim wasn’t on short offer from Prada either, and neither was leather-on-skin be it for tops or shorts.
