There's something about pub grub. Despite its greasy exteriors, smokey surroundings and striking impact on the scale, we unapologetically succumb to it every time. But there's hope for fans of the fare, thanks to a chic outlet that effortlessly tweaks pub food into something refined.
Left Bank at Souk Al Bahar creates a chic, eclectic mood with its red velvet walls, shimmering drapes, shiny golden wall lamps and plush couches. The overdose of glitter might blind some, but will win over others. Over all, we thought it made a dramatic start to our evening.
As we sat in a neat corner, the courteous staff attended to us almost immediately. The menu was limited but it helped us speed up our order. It was Greek Styled Lamb Cutlets and Fishcakes that grabbed our attention. The boney lamb pieces, escorted with tiny bowls of tomato-onion salad and crumbled feta, were cooked to succulent perfection, while the browned fish cutlets left much to be desired. The helpings were teeny, so we suggest a bigger order if in a bigger group.
For our mains, I picked the Mixed Souvlaki - meat chunks, dressed in an assortment of sauces and served on skewers. The varied flavours helped break the monotony and it's huge serving could be a turn-off for the weight-watchers. My partner's Fillet of Beef, a generous meat slab drizzled in Béarnaise sauce, proved more promising.
It's almost unorthodox to attempt to tackle sweet dishes at a pub. But we thought this unconventional place could set a different example. And it sure did! The lemon cake covered in crispy coconut flakes with a tangy raspberry coulis and whipped cream was incredible - I could've spent the entire evening feasting on those gorgeous cakes. The chocolate-orange brownie, however, wasn't as impressive. With all the effort that's gone into fine-tuning pub food, we think Left Bank deserves a visit. Even if for no other reason than to sample the Lemon Cake!
