Decisions, decisions...
This is my second week working at Notes and I have been asked to write this column. I was told it could be about absolutely anything, which fazed me at first. When given a wide choice, it makes it difficult to narrow things down. A bit like going into the supermarket faced with a hundred cereal brands to choose from. Which one do you pick? This got me thinking. What should you base a decision on? How do you know if you are making the right decision? Would you rather not have the choice?
Being back in Dubai for nearly two months now, I recently had a decision to make. Quite a big one — having just finished my master's in the UK after living there for six years — the choice was upon me to decide what to do for the rest of my life. The choice was whether to stay there or move here. Preparing myself for this decision for nearly a year and swaying back and forth between stay and go, I nearly went insane. Being a pretty rational person, the aim was to make the decision best for the future, but also being a human being, emotions crept up. Now, when choosing cereal at the shops it is pretty straight-forward, it all comes down to the taste of your palate. Life decisions are more complex.
With every day you learn and you grow and just when you think you know it all, something comes along and shows you don't. The process of growing up is not an easy one and with every step you come to know yourself a little better, so to make a choice now which may potentially affect the rest of your life is a daunting task, or so I thought at first — but it does not have to be.
A wise friend once said, "he who thinks too much does nothing". Seven simple words which put so much into perspective and instead of going round and round, driving myself half crazy, I bucked up and took the leap. I jumped and did not look back. In this day and age choices need to be made quickly. Don't over-think it, just do it!
