Ever been listening to the radio and thought this presenter is really, really bad, how did he ever get this job? Or simply just wished there was a radio show about things which really matter to you?

Well look no further. Dubai's first Podcasts are being produced with you, and only you in mind.

Podme.org, a Dubai-based website featuring 30-minute radio broadcasts by local hosts, officially went online on January 1 this year.

Spearheaded by Dubai resident Peter Hall, the initiative gives local people the chance to live their dreams and become radio presenters in an instant.

Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio programs or music videos, over the internet, for playback on mobile devices and personal computers.

The term podcast, like radio, can mean both the content and the method of delivery and are available all across the country.

Hall said: "We call it Reality Radio and are pleased to bring the first Podcasts to Dubai.

"With more than 400,000 hits since January, we have only just started realising just how popular this form of media really is. Our listeners are increasing by more than 30 per cent each month - which includes downloads from as far as America."

However Hall accepts there is still a mountain to climb.

Get involved

Podme is looking for people who are passionate and serious about the opportunity to podcast and who are prepared to commit to the long term.

Hall added: "We are all witness to an amazing development in broadcast technology and this - right here, right now - is the beginning of an incredibly exciting adventure and opportunity for us all. If you think you've got what it takes contact us using the podjock email link.

"We want to know who you are, where you live, what your show is about and why you think you would make a good podcaster. If you're successful, we'll be in touch to take you through the next part of the process.

"Alternatively if you don't think you've got what it takes to be in front of the microphone but would still love to be a part of Podme, check out the 'get involved' section as there is plenty of other stuff that needs doing.

"Currently Podme is not about making money although, depending on the success, we hope it will make money in the future. But equally it doesn't cost anything to broadcast - only time and commitment."

It's all history

The concept of podcasting was suggested in as early as 2000 and the technical components were available by the start of 2001, but it wasn't until 2003 that regular podcasts started showing up on well-known websites.

Podcasting is a compound word coined in 2004, that combined two words: iPod and broadcasting. Even though the name is a misnomer, in that podcasting doesn't require an iPod and no over-the-air broadcasting is required, it has maintained its prominence in the face of numerous alternatives.

Why create podme?

So just what is podme? Podme, the organisation, has been established as a vehicle for anyone who thinks they have what it takes to be a radio presenter or maybe even a radio star.

You don't need any experience in broadcasting to get involved but what you do need is time, drive, passion, enthusiasm and lots of commitment.

Peter Hall said: "As our tag line suggests, we believe that with the advent of podcasting, people of all ages, nationalities, colours and creeds have a unique opportunity to develop real community radio across a diverse, exciting and limitless spectrum of topics and subject matter.

"That doesn't mean we think everyone should start podcasting as that could create an audio nightmare.

"But we do believe there are thousands of you who really have something to say that's worth hearing and that you would deliver it with dignity, humour, irreverence and possibly even style - you just need the know how, resources and opportunity."

Humble beginnings

Don't imagine swanky studios, kitted out in the latest technology. Instead, picture a small but cosy (and well-decorated) converted garage in the Safa area of the city.

Hall transformed his car's former home and did a good job. Comfortable enough to do a great job while not too intimidating for anyone just having a go for the first time. And these are the people Hall is looking for.

Hall said: "Have you ever felt like life's passed you by - that you really could and should have been a contender?

If you answered yes to the above question then may we extend a warm, warm welcome to podme.org because this is where your dreams can come true."
