Here are a few detectives that have inspired our own curiosity and crime-solving desire for decades.

1. Philip Marlowe

The very picture of an old-school, hard-boiled detective, Philip Marlowe is American-British novelist Raymond Chandler’s creation. He is the lead protagonist in the book The Big Sleep, and others. Marlowe has a dry sense of humour, a sharp mind, a sartorial flair, and gets the job done, no matter what.

2. Sherlock Holmes

Perhaps the best-known detective of all time, this resident of 221B Baker Street is unparalleled in his skill. English author Arthur Conan Doyle’s character didn’t just bring a moral aspect to detective fiction, but also infused it with intelligence and scientific analysis. His bohemian lifestyle and difficult personality make Holmes a character that’s complex and difficult to ignore.

3. Hercule Poirot

English writer Agatha Christie’s Francophone Belgian character caught people’s attention for his exotic background and intriguing personality, when she first introduced him in 1920. Poirot, like Holmes, has an almost arrogant belief in his own abilities, and many quirks – like fastidiousness and a delicate constitution – that come as a surprise in someone so easily able to deduce the truth from falsehood. Regardless, his nose for crime-solving makes him a renowned detective, both in the literary and film world.

4. Miss Marple

Another Agatha Christie creation, Miss Marple is an unexpected detective. As a typical “little, old lady”, she’s petite, kind, and very grandmotherly. Behind this façade, however, is an astute mind and a memory to rival any young detective’s! While Miss Maple arrives at the conclusion to her cases in an extremely unthreatening, almost meek way, she never lets a criminal get away.

There are plenty other detectives out there, chasing mysteries and solving cases – from Dashiell Hammett’s Sam Spade to Colin Dexter’s Inspector Morse.
