Every once in a while, you come across a story of a dog saving its owner from certain death, or guarding a baby, or adopting a lamb (cue the “awws” for this story: a Dalmatian was seen taking care of a spotted lamb in Australia, in 2012). Dogs aren’t called man’s best friend for no reason!

The American Kennel Club classifies dog breeds into seven different groups, with each group tending to have common personality traits. Some examples are herding dogs, sporting dogs, working dogs, and toy dogs. However, if you spend enough time with them, you learn quickly that every dog is unique and has traits that are entirely their own.

In today’s Word Search, you’ll come across the Utonagan – an incredibly photogenic dog that was bred to look like a wolf. A mix of three beautiful breeds – Siberian Husky, German Shepherd, and Alaskan Malamute – the Utonagan embodies its name, which is Chinook Indian for ‘spirit of the wolf’. Despite their wild appearance, Utonagan dogs are family-oriented and do great with children.

Another dog in today’s puzzle, the Dachshund, was popularised in Disney movies like Toy Story. This long-bodied canine, often called a ‘sausage dog’, is a purebred, with a German history that goes back some 600 years. But don't be fooled by its compact size. The Dachshund is smart, vigilant, brave, and with a big-dog bark, makes a fine watchdog.
