Here are three facts about Elvis that you may not be aware of:

1. He had a twin

Elvis grew up as an only child in a poor family in the Mississippi, US. But he was born about 35 minutes after his identical twin brother Jesse Garon, who was stillborn. The musician spoke about his brother throughout his life.

2. He bought Graceland at 22

In 1957, Elvis paid $102,500 (Dh 376,492) for Graceland, the mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, that he would call his home for two decades. When he bought the home, the musician added his own touches to the property, including music-themed iron entrance gates, a ‘jungle room’ with an indoor waterfall, and a whole building for racquetball.

3. He served in the Army

In December 1957, even as Elvis’s popularity was off the charts, he was drafted into the US military. The 23-year-old received a great deal of media coverage as he was inducted into the Army as a private. He shipped out for an assignment in west Germany in September 1958, where he served as a jeep driver – all the while receiving stacks of fan mail. Elvis was eventually discharged from active duty in March 1960, at the rank of sergeant.
