Why the A-list ladies are dating below their status, and why it could spell a love disaster

The latest love trend to sweep through Hollywood has nothing to do with finding even more exotic places in which to get a lover's name inked, but has rather seen some of Hollywood's most famous and wealthiest women down-dating a series of men, ranging from J-Lo's backing dancer, Casper Smart, to Kate Winslet's bizarrely named man, Ned Rocknroll - who's had to depend on his billionaire uncle, Richard Branson, for a job. And last week, Anne Hathaway announced her engagement to her actor boyfriend, Adam Shulman, who hasn't had an acting job since 2008, whilst Christina Aguilera put on a lovey-dovey show for the cameras with her movie set assistant man (and rumoured bad party-boy influence), Matt Rutler.

Down Dating Movie set assistant, Matt Rutler Meeting on the set of last year’s movie, Burlesque, in which Christina starred and Matt was a set assistant, the pair has been inseparable ever since. And it’s no coincidence that Christina’s hook-up coincided with weekly photos of the singer stumbling out of Hollywood clubs at 4am, with sources dubbing Matt a “bad influence” on the mum-of-one.
Having filed for divorce from her husband, music producer Jordan Bratman in October last year, the divorce was finalised in April 2011, with industry insiders noting that Aguilera’s downward personal spiral started making headlines when Rutler came on the scene.
“Since she got with Rutler she’s flubbed the words to the National Anthem while performing at the Super Bowl, fell over onstage at the Grammys and been detained by cops for public intoxication and taken to jail for her own safety,” said one.
“When you need constant love and affection, the way that people in Hollywood so often do, you can get that very quickly and easily when you date down,” insisted US columnist, Rob Shuter.
“Famous people believe they are a big fish in a small pond and they really just want someone to tell them that all the time. Who wouldn’t want a fulltime fan following you around?”
