Abu Dhabi: Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) received its first shipment of bauxite ore on Sunday as the largest industrial company in the UAE gets ready to commission the UAE’s first alumina refinery next year.

EGA is currently building Al Taweelah alumina refinery with an investment of $3.3 billion (Dh12.1 billion) that is expected to commence production in the first half of 2019 and will convert bauxite into alumina for industrial use.

“Thousands of people are currently working hard to bring the construction of Al Taweelah alumina refinery to completion, and we look forward to producing our first alumina during the first half of next year,” said Abdullah Kalban, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of EGA in a statement.

About 61,450 tonne shipment of bauxite from Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée sailed to the UAE from the Republic of Guinea in West Africa on Sunday.
