Dubai: A Dh42 million boat maintenance facility built at the Dubai Creek is expected to cut the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) marine maintenance cost by 20 per cent.

The 5,000 square metres facililty in Al Garhoud comprises five workshops, three stores, a boat lifting crane and marine/external works area.

Capable of accommodating up to 16 boats, the facilty comprises a marina extending 250 metres and a dock capable of accommodating boats measuring up to 32 metres in length in addition to a boat lifting crane with a capacity of 100 tons.

The facility will carry out maintenance work for abras, ferries, and water taxis.

The workshop was inaugurated by Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of RTA’s board of executive directors.

The workshop is expected to provide maintenance services for about 198 marine transit vessels and has a workforce of about 32 persons.

“Al Garhoud Workshop is the first RTA workshop dedicated to the service of marine transit means manufactured of fibreglass and their engines. It contributes to reducing maintenance cost by 20 per cent, and steps up the quality of maintenance works and readiness of marine transit means by 100 per cent, besides boosting the safety of abras plying the Dubai Creek,” Ahmad Hashem Behroozian, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency, said.
