Dubai: For many of us, pets are an integral part of our lives. But it's a passion that can come with some serious bills.

In the United States, for example, an estimated $43 billion (Dh158 billion) was spent on pets alone in 2008 and this year the figure is tipped to exceed $45 billion (Dh165 billion).

Though there are no exact figures available here in the UAE, a significant amount is spent on pets, judging by the number of pet purchases and veterinary appointments.

"You need about Dh1,700 when you get a new pet," says Aisha Kelaif, an Emirati pet owner. "That is just to get set up. That is for vaccinating, microchipping, neutering and registering your pet."

Then there are extra costs such as grooming, accessories, bedding and occasional special treats. But more importantly, it's not just how much money you spend, but also the serious responsibility, care and love that go into making your pet a loved member of your family.
