Patna: A newly-wed bride in Bihar quietly walked away from the marriage venue and ended her life just after her wedding was over following some disputes over dowry.
The bizarre incident took place at Gondapur Chaudhary Nagar locality of Nawada district, some 123km south of Patna, on Thursday night, sending shock waves in the areas.
The wedding of Priyanka Kumari had been fixed with Krishna Kumar Sudhakar. On Thursday, a wedding procession reached the house of the girl and the guests were accorded a warm welcome by the bride’s family.
The prevailing atmosphere of happiness turned gloomy after the groom’s family demanded one million rupees (Dh53,556) and a luxury car as dowry right immediately. However, the bride’s family refused to oblige. There was a temporary halt to the wedding as both sides wrangled over the demand.
Although the wedding rituals took place after some time following intervention from village elders, the bonhomie was amiss. The incident shocked the bride who appeared tense right through the wedding rituals.
Witnesses said soon after the wedding rituals came to an end, the bride walked away from the wedding venue citing some urgency, locked herself in a room and committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan.
She was found thus when her family members went searching for her.
tempers flared and the bride’s party held the groom hostage and later registered a case against the in-laws. Police have begun investigations into the case.
The incident comes amid the Bihar state government launching a massive campaign against dowry across the state. Earlier this year, the state government had formed a human chain against dowry to raise awareness.
