Sharjah: An eight-year-old Pakistani boy drowned in the swimming pool of a building in Al Majaz area of Sharjah, a Sharjah Police official told Gulf News.

The cautionary message was issued after two Emirati girls, one-and-a-half-year-old Suad and her two-and-a-half-year-old cousin Shehab, drowned in a swimming pool of a villa in Mirdif while their families were having iftar.

According to statistics, the Sharjah Social Services Department in 2016 received 3,504 calls, out of which 484 were reports of parental negligence, 968 about child abuse, 45 sexual abuse cases and 2,007 cases related to financial and legal issues.

Call to parents

Sharjah Police have urged parents to supervise their children during this summer vacation.

Police blamed parents’ negligence for most of the accidents involving children, including missing reports, drowning and falling incident as they do not take proper care of their children.

“Parents should not leave children with nothing to do during the summer break and must engage them in healthy activities,” said a police officer.
