Dubai: Dubai Police organised an awareness session for bike riders to educate them about the dangers of sudden swerving in a step to reduce serious traffic accidents and deaths on the roads.

More than 110 bike riders attended the lecture organised by the Dubai Police, in cooperation with Zajel courier company, in their head office as part of a campaign as part of the efforts to reduce the number of deaths in accidents to zero by 2021.

The campaign targeted all riders, especially delivery boys of restaurants and courier companies who use motorbikes.

Corporal Omar Musallam Othman of the Traffic Department said the lecture was part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness among motorists, motorcyclists and all other road users.

“Sudden swerving is a major cause of traffic accidents. It can happen due to not paying attention, tyre bursts, speeding and using mobile phones while driving,” Othman said.

Khowla Kabanji, chief executive officer of Zajel, praised the lecture to educate delivery boys. “It is important to raise awareness among our bike couriers, who are reaching our clients across the UAE every day. This lecture serves to increase their awareness in relation to traffic safety laws and helps protect their lives and the lives of other road users,” Kabanji said.

According to Dubai Police, motorbikes were involved in 71 traffic accidents during the first nine months of 2017, which resulted in seven deaths and 72 injuries.
