Egypt seeks to extend emergency law

Cairo: The Egyptian government asked parliament on Monday to extend the emergency law for another two years or until the government prepares an anti-terrorism law.

Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif put the request to parliament, and sources said it was likely to get quick approval.

Under emergency law, which has been in force since 1981, police can hold people without charge for long periods. Authorities can also refer civilians to military courts.

Last month, a proposal for an anti-terrorism law that contained similar terms was scrapped.

Human rights groups have said the authorities abuse the law, and people have been detained for over ten years.
