Riyadh: A 17-year-old Canadian boy has been sentenced to a year in prison and 200 lashes in Saudi Arabia for his involvement in the murder of a Syrian classmate.

Sultan Kohail, 17, and his brother Mohammed, 23, were arrested last January after a school yard brawl resulted in the death of a fellow student.

Mohammed was convicted of murdering Syrian Munther Al Haraki and has already been handed a death sentence, along with a third man, a Jordanian national.

According to a defence lawyer, Sultan had gone to school to pick up his younger brother, when a group of young men started harassing his brother. A scuffle ensued during which Al Haraki died.

Canada has said it will seek clemency for Mohammed.

The boy's father is appealing Sultan's sentence to have it commuted to time already served.
