Oman increases blood money award

Muscat: Oman has raised diya (blood money) and arush (compensation for injuries) through a Royal decree issued on Wednesday evening.

The Royal order by Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed has raised the diya for the deceased to 15,000 Omani riyals (about Dh143,000). At the same time the order stipulates that compensations for injuries will be estimated based on the diya, and in all cases a loss of the function of a limb shall be considered a loss of the limb.

Medical mistakes

The Royal decree also says that blood money and injury compensation redress all physical and psychological injuries. In another order, the provisions of the practice of human medicine and dentistry law have been amended incorporating compensation for proven medical mistakes in cases of death or permanent full disability, partial disability, wounds and injuries.

It will be determined as provided for by the diya and injuries compensation estimation decree.

"The compensation in the case of permanent full disability shall have the same value of the compensation for death and compensation for medical errors resulting in psychological injuries only shall not exceed the diya for the deceased provided for in the decree on estimation of diya and compensation for injuries," says the order.
