US naval presence in Gulf 'key to ensuring stability'

Manama: Vice-Admiral William "Bill" Gortney on Saturday became the commander of the US Fifth Fleet after he relieved Vice-Admiral Kevin Cosgriff, who is retiring after over 37 years of service.

"The continued presence of coalition forces guarantees maritime security for those who depend on the free use of the seas," said Cosgriff in his farewell message during the change of command ceremony.

"From security arises stability, which enhances trade, promotes economic vitality and increases regional and global prosperity. US and coalition maritime forces interact with virtually every country in the region, and to my thinking the combination of persistent, credible naval power in conducting security and other operations is precisely the sort of thing we ought to be doing," said Cosgriff .

Gortney who was commander of the Harry S. Truman Strike Group, which deployed in the region during 2007-2008, pledged to continue the work of the US and coalition forces in the region.

"I am excited about the challenges ahead and promise you my commitment in working toward current and future goals together. My goal is to sustain and improve on the excellence already in place," he said.
