A Saudi father is facing charges after trying to smuggle 13 bottles of wine in his daughter's suitcase on the King Fahad Causeway linking Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
The man, in his 50s, was going home with his wife and six daughters when a customs officer decided to search all the suitcases. He eventually discovered the hidden bottles to the great shock of his daughter, owner of the suitcase, and family. The man initially denied any knowledge about the liquor, but eventually confessed to the smuggling attempt.
The bottles were confiscated and the man will have to answer to the judge, Al Yaum newspaper reported.
The 25-kilometre King Fahad Causeway was opened in November 1986 and more than 70 million people have crossed on both directions.
Wine and alcoholic drinks are banned in Saudi Arabia.
