London: Frontline British troops stationed in Afghanistan received a surprise visit from Britain's Prince William this week, his office said on Wednesday.

The Prince, who is second in line to the British throne, spent three hours with the troops in a secret visit at an airfield. The purpose of the trip was to familiarise him with RAF operations in action.

He also flew a military transport plane for a section of the journey to Kandahar, a spokesman said.

Monday's 30-hour confidential trip was sanctioned by Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles, and “passed without a hitch,'' the spokesman added.
