London: London is heating up faster than the rest of Britain, a government report revealed on Saturday.
Temperatures have gone up by 1.5 degrees Celsius since the early Seventies to around 11.5°C. That compared with a one degree rise in the UK as a whole and just 0.8 of a degree in Scotland.
Based on detailed Met Office records, the report concluded that the most significant cause was human activity. Sea waters around the country have also risen, by around 0.7 degrees.
From next year, the dangers of climate change to London are to be revealed on an official government website. People will be able to key in their address and see forecasts of rising temperatures, sea levels and the likelihood of stormy weather in their area. Last year's Stern Report warned that a 3°C rise in global temperatures would mean the city becoming 7°C hotter within 50 years.
If that happened offices would become difficult to work in, Tube lines unbearable and the clay foundations of the city would dry out and become unstable.
