The move by President Napolitano comes after the talks held by the country's leaders to form an interim government were deemd unsuccesful.

The political crisis was triggered by the resignation of Prime Minister Romano Prodi after the loss of a confidence vote in the Senate in January.

The law states that President Napolitano has to call an election within 70 days of dissolving parliament
