Strong earthquake shakes Indonesia province

Jakarta: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck West Papua, Indonesia early on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey said, in what is the latest in a series of powerful tremors to hit the region.

The latest quake struck just off the coast of West Papua, some 75 kilometres from the main city of Manokwari at 7:48 am on Wednesday morning.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Two strong quakes measuring 7.6 and 7.3 on the Richter scale flattened buildings and complexes across the region on Sunday.

The quakes have forced thousands of people to flee to refugee camps in the area. Some have been living outside their home on yards and streets.

Officials say there were some 14,000 refugees across the province.
