Jaffna: At least five people were killed by floods brought by heavy rains in Sri Lanka, officials said on Saturday.
Keerthi Ekanayake of the Disaster Management Centre said that the northern Jaffna peninsula, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts are inundated with flood water.
An estimated 71,000 people are left without homes after persistent rain destroyed thousands of houses over the past few days.
Disaster management officials said the thousands of displaced people are now living in temporary shelters.
