Seoul: Samsung Group chairman Lee Kun-hee has resigned amid a corruption scandal involving a multi-billion dollar slush fund to bribe judges and officials.

Lee was indicted for tax evasion and breach of trust, following a three-month investigation into corruption charges.

There is no indication of who might replace Lee, who made his announcement at a nationally televised press conference.

"I have decided to resign from the post of chairman," he said, apologising for having "caused troubles to the nation with the special probe."

Samsung has said it would outline plans for reform this week.
