Policemen encouraged to learn Korean

Manila: The Philippine National Police (PNP) in suburban Pasig has enrolled several policemen in expensive language schools to learn the Korean language, a local paper said.

Police officers assigned at the business district and other key areas in Pasig City were given scholarship money to learn the Korean language, Senior Supt Francisco Uyami Jr, chief of the Pasig City police force told the Bulletin.

"This will help them understand the language of the South Korean residents who are now in Pasig City," said Uyami, adding that policemen must be able to talk and answer the queries of the foreign national.

"They will be effective in performing their duties," said Uyami, adding that policemen in Pasig would no longer be using sign language to talk to South Koreans.

Learning the Korean language would be a great help to the police especially in investigating crimes, Uyami explained.

The policemen will undergo 10 sessions, spending two hours per session, said Uyami adding that the short-session will make the policemen fluent in the language.

"These police officers will be deployed in strategic places," Uyami said.
