Capsized Philippine ferry overloaded, says coastguard

Manila: Rescuers on Tuesday found seven more bodies—all children—after a ferry capsized off the northern coast of Luzon, officials said.

At least 26 passengers were still missing after the Maejan overturned on Sunday after being hit by high waves. It was on its way from the island of Calayan to the country's main island of Luzon.

At least 30 people drowned and only 46 out of the 102 passengers on board survived as they swam or clung to driftwood and other objects.

The Philippine coastguard said the ferry was carrying more than twice its registered capacity. It was licensed to carry only 40 passengers.

"The captain should have declared that only 40 passengers should be boarded on that vessel but it seems he neglected that (maritime) circular," said Coastguard spokesman Lieutenant Gary Gimotea.
