Karachi: Lorry drivers at Pakistan's main port of Karachi ended their week-long strike on Tuesday after a government promise to reduce highway taxes.

"All I can tell you is that the strike has ended," said Noor Khan Niazi, president of the Karachi Goods Carriers' Association.

The government has agreed to cut highway taxes by 40 per cent, a representative said.

Protesting drivers had prevented lorries from entering the port, and traders estimated that millions of dollars worth of perishable goods had been stranded by the strike.
