Islamabad: A high court yesterday ordered the government to make legislation within 15 days for the introduction of local government in Islamabad.
The local government system, comprising elected mayors and district administrations, was introduced throughout the country, excluding the federal capital, during the rule of former ruler Pervez Musharraf.
The Islamabad High Court passed the order for making a separate law for local government in the capital while hearing a writ petition filed by advocate Iqbal Kokab, who also heads a human rights group.
The court rejected a government plea seeking two-months' time and directed the ministries of interior and local government to finalise the legislation within a fortnight and inform it accordingly.
