Ahmedabad: Police found 11 unexploded bombs in the western Indian city of Surat on Tuesday, three days after a series of bombs in the same state killed 45 people.

"All the bombs have been defused," V.M. Pargi, joint commissioner of police, said in a phone interview from Surat. "Most of the bombs contain ammonium nitrate and have electronic circuits attached to them."

The discoveries came after police across the country stepped up security following threats of further terrorist attacks by an Islamist group claiming responsibility for the blasts in Ahmedabad, Gujarat's largest city.

A number of bombs were located in crowded residential areas, while others were found near an overpass.

Extra police were deployed on the streets of Surat. Schools closed early and children sent back home. Large crowds gathered in the streets to watch police defuse the bombs.

A series of 16 bombs ripped through the nearby city of Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat on Saturday, a day after bombs killed one woman in the IT hub of Bangalore.

On Sunday, two unexploded car bombs were also found by police in Surat.
