Mumbai attacks: Few citizens turn out for parade to mark anniversary

Mumbai: The first anniversary of the terrorist attacks that paralysed the Indian city of Mumbai is being marked with a show of strength by the city's re-equipped police force - but few local people bothered to turn out to watch.

A fleet of new police vehicles, including armoured camouflage vehicles and rapid intervention vehicles, manned by commandoes with guns drawn, paraded to a marching band played.

The parade was performed mainly for 20 TV vans and a smattering of morning walkers.

Earlier, groups held vigils, calling for police reform and painting murals to remember the 166 killed.

On November 26, 2009, 10 Pakistan-based gunmen fanned out across the Indian financial capital, shooting up luxury hotels, a major train station and other sites, as police and military struggled for nearly three days to regain control.
