Iran Air flight makes emergency landing in Mumbai after engine catches fire

Mumbai: An airport official says an Iran Air flight with 271 people on board has made an emergency landing at Mumbai airport after the pilot detected a fire in one of the engines.

All of the passengers are safe, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to release the information to reporters.

The pilot noticed the fire shortly after the plane took off on Tuesday evening from Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital, for Tehran, the official said. The pilot turned back the plane, which the Press Trust of India news agency said was a Boeing 747-200.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

Iran Air officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
