Mumbai: Three of India's best police officers, including chief of ATS Hemant Karkare, encounter specialist Vijay Salaskar and additional commissioner Ashok Kamte were killed in Wednesday's terror attack in Mumbai.

Hemant Karkare, an IPS officer of the 1982 batch, had served in RAW before he was made the ATS chief this year.

Vijay Salaskar, an officer of the 1983 batch is one of the leading encounter specialists of India. He has killed 75 dreaded criminals in police encounters and was heading the anti-extortion wing of the crime branch.

Ashok Kamte was the DCP, Zone 1, in Mumbai and was also a key officer of the state police.

Hemant Karkare, 54, was hit by three bullets in his chest, while Vijay Salaskar and Ashok were killed while fighting the terrorists.
