Bangkok: Police said that five small bombs planted by suspected insurgents have exploded outside banks and ATM machines in restive southern Thailand, leaving two people injured.

Police said another three bombs were defused.

Police Maj. Chaitat Inthanujit said the Tuesday morning attacks targeted state-run banks in Narathiwat province, one of three southern provinces gripped by a Muslim insurgency that has left more than 4,000 dead since 2004.

All explosions occurred before the banks had opened for the day.
