Bush makes Iran weapon claim

Washington: US President George W Bush has claimed that Iran's Revolutionary Guards have been implicated in some attacks on American troops in Iraq.

He said he was “certain'' that a branch of the guard was supplying weapons to insurgents.

But the President also denied he was sowing the seeds for an attack on Iran, and admitted he did not know who was behind the unit, known as the Ouds Force.

The claim, made in a US House of Representatives debate over Bush's Iraq plan, follows on from previously unattributed comments from US officials.

These comments said that the Iranian government was supplying weapons to Shiite insurgents.

Named officials have stopped short of confirming the accusation until Bush made his speech on Wednesday.

Mr Bush said he did not know who had instructed the Ouds Force to start supplying weapons, but added that he was only trying to protect US soldiers in Iraq.
